Popping awake at 3:30 am and not being able to sleep due to my mind racing about all the stuff that needs to get done before we take the 800 mile trip. We are taking my son to a scoliosis specialist for a 2 week “bootcamp”. Ya we leave in a week and my truck no longer has the transmission inside it
I have been trying to diagnose a noise that presented itself after installing my new turbo setup. It only happens in 5th gear. It was similar to the sound of when we would stick baseball cards in our spokes and ride around. Only a lot louder.
There is no way I am towing my camp trailer that far with a sound like that. Even driving it the little bit to attempt to diagnose it wasn’t too fun. With the added horsepower and torque something finally gave up. The sound used to be very faint prior to the turbo upgrade. Now... it’s letting me know it’s there.
The time and cost it would take to take my truck to a shop and have them pull it would be insane!! I probably wouldn’t see my truck for a few weeks and I don’t have that kind of time. With camping reservations at a camp site 20 minutes from the Dr. office and no sites available in the near future... things are getting a little stressful. My son needs to get to this Dr. ASAP before he hits another growth spurt. Time is of the essence.
So my son and I took the dive and pulled the transmission out of my truck yesterday. It took us about 3-1/2 hours to get it out. Not to shabby for it being my first time and his.
Then something bad happened. We were separating the transfer case and transmission when they suddenly split apart and the transmission fell off the forklift. It cracked the housing near the bottom!! Finding a new housing is impossible!! So I am gonna have to find someone that can weld it up. I’m really lucky it just happened on the bottom and not the top. The top half is where the bolt used to hold it to the engine are.
Just another setback it all...
The only way to find out exactly what is wrong is to pull it and open it up. So while I have it pulled, I’m installing a new clutch. Then I am gonna reseal and install new bearings in the transmission. Basically rebuilding it. I have never done this before either. Thank God for the internet!! I found a full PDF manual on how to do it. I have the majority of the tools but I need to get a bearing puller.
The housing is getting removed and cleaned today and with that off it should reveal the issue I am having. Plus my transmission will be nice and clean once again. I have never seen it that way... ever. Lol.
I still have a 38 gallon rear tank to install, an A/C hose to replace, and this transmission issue to fix. Let alone all the other stuff that goes along with leaving for 2 weeks. Often I have to tell myself...
