We, human beings, always live in the belly of symbols that define our lives, give us reasons to act and to carry on existing. They are our raison d'être, our soul's heart. It does not matter if we are not aware of them; the symbols that live within us continue to build our realities forever.

After all, symbols contain our ideas and feelings about life. In them are preserved our hopes, fears and our most transcendent reasons... our whys. And as Nietzsche wrote:

He who has a why to live for, can endure almost any how.

In the past I had not fully understood the importance of the Christmas symbols in our lives. That has changed because, due to the terrible conditions produced by the dictatorship in my country, today most Venezuelans have had the saddest Christmas of their lives.

Children crying because they want to see their parents, who have emigrated to get the money the family needs. Families sitting at the table in Christmas without enough to eat. And so many empty chairs, left by those who have fled to guarantee their own survival and that of their loved ones; to guarantee a future.

In my family there are also many empty chairs and, without many stuff to share, we dedicated ourselves on Christmas Eve to share our feelings and our company. Then I understood the deep and eternal meaning of these celebrations: It's the gratitude for life.

It doesn't matter that Christmas has been dressed with the superficiality of consumerism, advertisements and the most strident voices of the capitalist world; its fundamental values and meanings always remain alive under the masks of society, in people's hearts. When we have nothing to give, we understand that the essential thing was always to give ourselves.

So Christmas is really about offering ourselves. It is about love, gratitude, and the joy of staying alive. It is about giving life a round of applause.

The material stuffs are secondary. Therefore, let us make it always just an expression of our love and our joy.

When we are children we know how to live like this, with our eyes set on the present and its opportunities. At this time of the year, let us recover the most valuable spiritual jewels of our childhood.

Whether you are an atheist, Christian, or of other religions, open your eyes and see what is hidden behind our prejudices: the human values that transcend beliefs.

We can always offer the best of ourselves and, as long as we live, that is something no dictatorship can take away from us.

Los seres humanos vivimos siempre en el vientre de símbolos que definen nuestras vidas, nos dan razones para actuar y para continuar existiendo. Ellos son nuestra raison d'être, el corazón de nuestras almas. No importa que no seamos conscientes de ellos; los símbolos que viven dentro de nosotros siguen construyendo nuestras realidades por siempre.

Al fin y al cabo, los símbolos contienen nuestras ideas y sentimientos sobre la vida. En ellos se conservan nuestras esperanzas, temores y nuestras más transcendentes razones... nuestros porqués. Como dijo Nietzsche:

Aquel que posee un porqué para vivir puede soportar casi cualquier cómo.

En el pasado yo no había comprendido plenamente la importancia de los símbolos de Navidad en nuestras vidas. Eso ha cambiado porque, debido a las terribles condiciones producidas por la dictadura en mi país, hoy la mayoría de los venezolanos ha tenido la Navidad más triste de sus vidas.

Niños llorando porque quieren ver a sus padres que han emigrado para conseguir el dinero que necesita la familia. Familias sentadas a la mesa en Navidad sin mucho para comer. Y tantísimas sillas vacías, dejadas por aquellos que han huido para garantizar la supervivencia propia y la de sus seres queridos; para garantizar un futuro.

En mi familia también hay muchas sillas vacías y, sin muchas cosas materiales para compartir, nos dedicamos en Nochebuena a compartir nuestros sentimientos y nuestra compañía. Entonces comprendí el significado profundo y eterno de estas celebraciones: Es el agradecimiento a la vida.

No importa que las navidades se hayan vestido con la superficialidad del consumismo, anuncios publicitarios y las voces más estridentes del mundo capitalista; sus valores fundamentales y su significado permanecen siempre vivos bajo las caretas de la sociedad, en el corazón de las personas. Cuando no tenemos nada que dar, comprendemos que lo importante siempre fue darnos a nosotros mismos.

Entonces la Navidad se trata, en realidad, de ofrecernos. Se trata de amor, agradecimiento y del gozo por continuar vivos. Se trata de darle un aplauso a la vida.

Lo material es secundario. Por eso, hagamos siempre que solo sea una expresión de nuestro amor y nuestra alegría.

Cuando somos niños sabemos vivir así, con la mirada puesta en el presente y sus oportunidades. En esta época recuperemos las joyas espirituales más valiosas de nuestra infancia.

No importa que seas ateo, cristiano o de otras religiones; abre tus ojos y observa lo que se oculta detrás de nuestros prejuicios: los valores humanos que trascienden las creencias.

Siempre podemos ofrecer lo mejor de nosotros y, mientras vivamos, eso es algo que ninguna dictadura puede arrebatarnos.

Ni homoj ĉiam vivas en la sino de simboloj kiuj difinas niajn vivojn, donas kialojn al ni por agi kaj por plu daŭri en la vivo. Ili estas nia raison d'être, nia animkoro. Tute ne gravas se ni ne konscias pri ili; la simboloj en ni vivantaj daŭras konstruante niajn realojn por ĉiam.

Super ĉio, simboloj enhavas niajn ideojn kaj sentojn pri la vivo. En ili konserviĝas niaj esperoj, timoj kaj niaj plej transcendaj motivoj... niaj kialoj. Laŭ esprimite de Nietzsche:

Tiu kiu posedas kialon por vivi, povas toleri preskaŭ ĉian kielon.

Estintece mi ne tute komprenis la gravecon de kristnaskaj simboloj en niaj vivoj. Tio ĵus ekŝanĝiĝis tial ke, pro la teruraj kondiĉoj estigitaj de diktatoreco mialande, hodiaŭ plejmulto da venezuelanoj havis la plej malgajan Kristnaskfeston de siaj vivoj.

Infanoj plorante ĉar ili deziras revidi siajn paĉjojn, kiuj elmigris por atingi la monon bezonatan de la familio. Familioj sidante ĉe manĝotablo Kristnasknokte sen sufiĉaj manĝotaĵoj. Kaj tiomege da malplenaj seĝoj, lasitaj de tiuj kiuj forfuĝis, celante garantii la postvivadon propran kaj tiun de siaj geamatoj; celante garantii estontecon.

En mia familio ankaŭ estas multaj malplenaj seĝoj kaj, sen multe da materiaĵoj donaceblaj, ni dediĉis nin dum Kristnasknokto al donacado je niaj sentoj kaj ĉeesto. Tiam mi ekkomprenis la profundan kaj eternan signifon de ĉi tiaj celebradoj: Doni dankon al la vivo.

Ne gravas tio ke nun Kristnasko estas vestita per la surfacemo de konsumismo, reklamadoj kaj la plej akraj voĉoj de la kapitalisma mondo; ĝiaj fundamentaj valoroj kaj ĝia signifo restas vivantaj sub la maskoj sociaj, en la homa koro. Kiam oni ne havas ion por doni, tiam oni komprenas ke la esenca aĵo ĉiam estis sindonado.

Do Kristnasko temas, reale, pri sinofero. Ĝi temas pri amo, dankemo kaj ĝojo tial ke ni ankoraŭ vivas. Ĝi temas pri donaci aplaŭdon al la vivo.

Materiaĵoj duecas. Tial ni faru ke ili estos ĉiam nur esprimo el niaj amo kaj ĝojo.

Infanaĝe ni scias sperti vivon tiumaniere, kun la rigardo sur estantecon kaj ties ŝancojn. Ĉiepoke ni reatingu la plej valorindajn spiritualajn juvelojn de nia infaneco.

Ĉu vi estas ateisto, ĉu kristano aŭ alireligia; malfermu viajn okulojn kaj kontemplu tion kio kuŝas malantaŭ niaj antaŭjuĝoj; la humanaj valoroj kiuj transcendas ĉian kredon.

Ni ĉiam povas alporti la plej bonajn ecojn el ni kaj, dum la tempo kiam ni vivos, neniu diktatoreco povos tion depreni de ni.
