The House of Seven Gables is both a house and story. The story, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1851, is a ghost story written about this very house in Salem, Massachusetts. Hawthorne lived down the street from this house and had a relative living in the house who encouraged him to write about it. The book was very popular in the late 19th Century and eventually the house was redone and turned into a tourist attraction. If you're in Salem you can take a tour of the house and learn all about its history.
