Leaf frogs can survive in an entirely frozen area. Their body temperature will also fall below 0 and they are frozen aswell.
Nope, they are not dead, although it seems so. They can anticipate their bodytemperature to the surrounding temperature and still survive. What about the blood? Does it freeze?
The blood does not freeze - internal the frog has some frost protection. The water inside of its body would crystallize otherwise and the ice crystals would destroy the cells.
As we all know water is expanding when it is freezing.
The temperature falls below 0 but it is not actually frozen like water.
But it is impressive how nature can help itself. I sometimes wonder how other species manage to survive the cold. For example mosquitos - why don't they all simply die? Would be great.
