Sonrisa Beach 🌊☀️🏖👙 - Perfect for children and seniors (ENG - SPA)
Located along the coast of Puerto Cabello, Sonrisa Beach features crystal-clear waters with no waves, making it perfect for children and seniors who don’t have to worry about being swept away by strong waves.
The ocean is my favorite place—my paradise and my happy place. A trip to the ocean means finding joy and relaxation, refreshing the body, and clearing the mind.
Getting to Know Sonrisa Beach
Location
Playa Sonrisa is located in Puerto Cabello, Carabobo State, Venezuela, right in the heart of the city, just a few blocks from Plaza Bolívar; you can easily walk from downtown to the beach.
It is one of the beaches that make up the coastal area of Puerto Cabello. Because it’s in the city center, it’s very popular and is usually crowded with people.
First Impression
When I arrived, it seemed well-organized, with space to park cars and buses. At the entrance, street vendors are ready to offer everything from hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen to spots near the water with awnings and umbrellas, as well as food and whatever else you might need.
When we arrived, the first thing we did was find a spot near the water. With the help of a “toldero”—that’s what they call the people who rent out the awnings—we found a good spot; if we’d tried to do it on our own, it would have been an impossible task with so many people around. The “toldero” works in partnership with the restaurants; this job is a mix of a beach waiter who finds you a shaded spot on the beach and brings you your food, and they also provide a bathroom where you can change clothes and take care of basic needs.
I never thought I’d need the services of a “toldero,” but on this beach it’s absolutely necessary because the few coconut trees were reserved, and there was nowhere to shelter from the relentless sun. So I teamed up with a small group of women—two sisters and another woman traveling alone, who was there for the same reason as us—and we all split the cost of the canopy rental and the meal combo. In total, there were the two sisters, the other woman, my brother, and me—and the five of us split the cost, which worked out better for our budget.
Beach Tour
I really love the ocean, and when I go to the beach, I spend as much time as possible in the water. I hadn’t been to the beach in two years, and my brother hadn’t been in even longer, so I always see returning to the ocean as a great opportunity that other people don’t have. Even for me, it’s a privilege when compared to people who, for geographical or economic reasons, have never experienced it—I feel blessed and grateful.
Once we changed our clothes and put on our swimsuits, my brother and I went for a walk to explore the entire coastline—at first, barefoot, because the plan was to jump right into the water. Thank goodness I told him, “As soon as you step on the sand, run all the way to the water.” The sprint we took at full speed was anything but normal 🏃♀️ 🏃, but thank God we made it—the sand was so hot that if we’d stayed on it for even a few more seconds, I don’t know what would’ve happened.
There were lots of people of all ages, and even animals. I saw several little dogs with their families, and honestly, I’m not sure if it’s good for the animals because the sun, the heat, and the hot sand were all extremely intense.
It was my first time at this beach; I’d heard about it, and it was recommended to me as a place to bring my mom and grandma, who are older. Its best feature is the calm, almost imperceptible waves—it feels like a saltwater pool.
We walked around looking for the best spot to swim; we climbed up onto a sort of boardwalk, and from there we saw all the attractions the beach has to offer—there are several inflatable trampolines and lots of yachts. From there, we spotted some friends and people from the same tour group, and I took some photos of them; I posed for my brother, and we also took a few selfies.
Food
Lunch arrived right on time. There were plenty of options to choose from, ranging from beef soup for $7 to a seafood casserole for $18, as well as “sea and land” seafood grills for $27 or a mixed grill for $20.
Seafood, fish, or Creole dishes ranging from $20 to $25—that was the menu at one of the restaurants. The one we chose had more variety and combo meals that are more affordable for large groups.
In the end, the group decided on a karité fish combo that included 10 fish fillets, 15 cheese-stuffed plantain fritters, French fries, and a salad. All of that for 35 $, and we ended up paying 7 $ each. I had planned to buy a combo for two—since we were going to eat the same thing in the same quantity—which came out to 23 $.
It worked out better for me to eat from the larger combo, and so I used the money I saved on food to help pay for the beach umbrella. The food was delicious and we were satisfied; the sisters offered us soda with lunch, and the other lady treated me to a nice glass of sangria on ice—I couldn’t have asked the universe for more.
Yachts and SUVs
After lunch, to help our food settle, we went for a walk to the other end of the beach. We found welcome signs and a handmade wooden sign with the beach’s name, shaped like a totem pole with faces. Of course, we took several photos to remember the moment.
We kept walking because we wanted to reach the yacht pier; even though I knew access might be restricted, I wanted to make my brother and my friend happy. This area was more upscale, with large umbrellas, and the parking lot was packed with high-end cars and SUVs. My brother couldn’t resist and got carried away by the excitement, touching the SUV of his dreams with a huge smile. He’s not one to laugh—on the contrary, he usually looks displeased with his circumstances—but his inner child felt happy.
Negatives
Because it’s a peaceful beach close to downtown, it’s very popular and in high demand, getting way too crowded for my taste.
With a yacht marina so close to the beach, plus a fueling station for these boats right in the ocean (I saw the pictures), the water and sand turn black, creating black sand and water with an oily consistency. This is the case for much of the beach. See my GIF.
I could have omitted this information about the water, but then it wouldn’t be an objective review; besides, I want to present my opinion in a fair and balanced way.
I’m sure that if these types of boats weren’t present on the beaches—which has recently become common, especially in the keys—the water would be wonderful and the beach even more beautiful. This is a source of pollution that the government is allowing to continue unchecked.
Positive Points
The ones I mentioned earlier—its location, the gentle waves, its crystal-clear waters despite the fuel from the yachts, the shops and the availability of restrooms, food, and amenities, and the beautiful views from any angle—make Playa Sonrisa a place to share and relax.
I had a great day at the beach—I really needed it, and my body knew it 😁😆. I recommend it, though be sure to take precautions and try to find the best spot on the entire beach.
Thanks for reading to the end.

Conociendo a Playa Sonrisa
