Yellow. Huge fields of yellow. The woman who had the best spot in our train that would take us about 30 kms up the mountain in a full hour seemed to think that was boring. How old? 70? 72? Grocery bags were sitting in her lap. Chin in her hand. Bored.
She looked at her watch: the train hadn't left yet - from her expression I felt it wasn't an exception.
Me, a first-timer on this specific train, kept on wondering. Yellow fields, mountain tops. A tiny train riding us all up. Slowly, of course.
"A deer! Look!" My boyfriend pointed to a spot in the woods which he could see from the train window. I missed it. Coming from a land of sheep and cow I rarely see a deer - the last time was Scotland. They have so many you can easily find them on menu's in restaurants too.
Still sulking I didn't get the change to see the deer I jumped up when I thought I saw one... Or no... Yes... It was an animal, yes, but this one was - "A fox! Look! A fox!" I pointed out of the same train window my boyfriend had pointed from only 5 seconds ago.
A fox? If I was sad I had missed spotting a deer, a fox is an animal I had NEVER seen before in my live. Let alone from a train window.
Suddenly people left the train. A few people stayed. We weren't at our end station yet but I always get my information from human behaviour and something wasn't right.
Correct. A girl walked towards us and pointed: "bus, bus, autobus", she said, so we understood the train wouldn't go further and instead we would be hopping on a bus for the last part of this ride.
It rained. The first three-quarters of the trip I was able to see yellow fields, forests, a fox. Now it was raining and raining and raining. Of course at the same time we had to get out of the train.
We hopped onto a bus. The first bus had already left, all filled up, this one was empty. It didn't matter. They drove the bus just for the two of us.
I loved it. That morning I was in terrible pain and my boyfriend who loves me advised me against doing any walking that day. Of course he was right. But I wanted to go anyway. So I did. And all I could think about at this moment was: I saw yellow fields. And a fox. And suddenly I'm sitting in a huge empty bus which is driving me through one of the most beautiful mountain areas of Europe.
I thought the rain on the bus window was beautiful. Because the day was beautiful.
