“Sad Is Not A Sin” is about having room to feel what you feel, even when your sadness makes someone else uncomfortable. Some things hurt. We shouldn’t have to apologize for that.
I wrote the original lyrics and recorded the vocals, generated parts of the drums, bass and instrumental backing, and worked with Brian Grass to mix those elements. I then sent my mix to Makis Gibs, who added several layers of electric guitar, bringing his own emotion and voice into the song.
For the video, I built a world around an abandoned Victorian conservatory deep in the woods at night. I created the images with ChatGPT, animated them with Happy Horse, and edited everything in Sony Vegas alongside our real performance footage.

SAD IS NOT A SIN Lyrics
Verse 1
You laid your whole life at my feet
And God, I know what that should mean
I know the miles, I know the years
I know the hands that carried me
So why does every honest tear
Feel like a debt I couldn't pay?
Like loving everything you've done
Means I don't get to hurt this way
Pre-Chorus
I see you
I swear I do
But seeing all your love
Can't make my sorrow untrue
Chorus
I can't repent for being sad
Sad is not a sin
I can't keep bending who I am
To make your world fit my skin
I can love you, I can thank you
I can mean every word I said
And still wake up with an aching heart
I cannot love myself out of
I won't call my sorrow evil
Just to prove my love is real
I can love you with my whole damn heart
And still feel what I feel
Verse 2
I've learned the language of every room
Changed my rhythm, changed my tune
Found the shape that made you safe
Then lived inside it far too long
I learned your colors, learned your wounds
Learned where not to place my feet
Made a home around your heart
Then wondered what was left of me
And when I moved an inch outside
The version you had learned to know
You asked me where the old me went
She didn't leave—
She had to grow.
Pre-Chorus
I see you
I always did
Maybe that's why I disappeared
Inside the lives I tried to fix
Chorus
I can't repent for being sad
Sad is not a sin
I can't keep bending who I am
To make your world fit my skin
I can love you, I can thank you
I can mean every word I said
And still wake up with an aching heart
I cannot love myself out of
I won't call my sorrow evil
Just to prove my love is real
I can love you with my whole damn heart
And still feel what I feel
Bridge
baby love was never meant
To make two people disappear
baby truth is standing naked
Without making someone wrong
Maybe I don't have to leave you
Maybe I don't have to stay the same
Maybe love can hold the question
Without needing someone to blame
Your love is real.
My sadness is real.
Neither one has to erase the other.
