This song began with an electric guitar improvisation by Makis Gibs, originally titled “Grey Lines, Fading Dreams — Electric Guitar Improvisation over a Loop.”
I took the instrumental from Makis’ performance and wrote an original vocal, melody and lyric over it. There was something incredibly honest in the guitar — something vulnerable underneath the notes — and I wanted the vocal to meet it in that same place rather than try to polish it away.
Grey Lines Inside my Heart is about the difference between talking about healing and actually being willing to feel.
It is about realizing that sometimes we learn all the language, recognize all the signs, search for awakening and light — while parts of us are still bleeding somewhere underneath it all.
Maybe waking up isn't about transcending our humanity.
Maybe it is about coming back into it.
Coming back into the body.
Admitting we're afraid.
Admitting we're angry.
Letting another person see where we're wounded.
Choosing honesty over the appearance of being healed.
And then the words eventually give way to something much simpler:
Ohhh my heart… my heart…
my heart, hold my heart…
That chorus feels almost like crying to me. There isn't an answer in it. It's simply the heart asking to be held instead of explained.
One of the lines that carries the meaning of the whole song for me is:
“I would rather meet you honest
than enlightened and afraid.”
Maybe we were never broken. Maybe somewhere along the way, we were simply taught to abandon pieces of ourselves while searching for something higher.
This one is raw, simple and very close to my heart.
