I took these photos for identification purposes. I did not want to. I don't photograph such monsters. And to be honest, I may have seen something like this only once in my life before. And it was in another country, much warmer and with a much different climate. And since I had never seen such a creature before, I had to be shown it to see it. Maybe you know how the human mind works with unfamiliar objects - I've written about it before.
But lo and behold, the monsters are spreading every year. And every year they are new.
Thank God this was a single specimen, not some nest for example!
And then I searched a lot on the Internet (perhaps out of fear). But apparently I was looking in a very wrong way. Because I started the search like this: "huge caterpillars in Bulgaria". Nothing. Then I included a description - brown, big, etc. Nothing.
That was a mistake on my part. It did not occur to me that this animal is probably not typical of the country at all. I see it for the first time and I only see a single piece.
Only today I came across the right track. I just wrote a caterpillar with a horn. And the answer came out: the pink-spotted hawkmoth, Agrius cingulata.
It turned out to be true, it is not typical of the country, so there was no way I could find it this way.
On the other hand, I'm sure I've never seen the imago. Also understandable - it is a nocturnal creature.
Well, I love moths. I don't know why I'm so afraid of their primal forms. Very impractical on my part. 😃🐛🦋
