When i was in the 4th grade i was diagnosed as being dyslexic, i was also born left handed and changed over to right handed in grade 1. I started having a tutor in the 5th grade, Mrs Rushworth, she basically taught me how to read with flash cards and we would read stories. This was around the same time i got a Bass guitar, so the love of reading and playing music are the two things is till love doing the most. Learning to play music is great for getting the Neuron's fired up. I recently read a book by Dr Norman Doidge, "The brain that changes it's self" he is cutting edge Doctor who writes about individual stories where people who faced extreme brain damage and were able to rewire their brains. It' a very inspiring book. In my case i am continually working on learning music, i am challenging myself to learn how to sight read, it's learning another language and the more i do it the easier it gets. What i got from the Norman Doidge book is that, the brain is capable of incredible things, but like your body, it needs to be exercised, the brain needs that exercise too. Whether it's crossword puzzles or sudoku it needs a workout. I prefer to play music, guitar, bass, piano, sing read or write.
