Being a musician is like being a farmer, you plant the seeds, create a healthy environment for the seeds to grow and tend the garden. You have to protect your seeds from an assortment of pests. Like doubt, boredom, self criticism, depression and being scattered. Like a farmer you have to get up early and put in the time, if you truly want to reap what you sow. I like to read a lot of books that give me inspiration, that fuel my songwriter inside of me, currently i am traveling in Thailand and i brought with me some good books and bought a few in Chiang Mai as well. I look at these books as tools in my tool box, or my advisors who help me navigate tricky waters. Just like a farmer has all his tools, his shovel, plough, rake and his tractor to carve a path for his seeds to grow. A songwriter has his instruments, music and books. When i read before i go to sleep, i find that even though i fall asleep, my subconscious mind takes over and starts to work, when i wake up to take a pee, i remember what my subconscious mind has been up to. And for the rest of my sleep it's as if i can hear my thoughts hard at work on my music. Telling me what i need to focus on, coming up with ideas. after awhile i need to fall back asleep for a little bit to rest after all of that "Nocturnal" farm work my brain been up to. Being a musician or a writer is a 24 hour a day job, ideas and inspiration comes at any time of the day and like a farmer you have be there to receive them. The Biblical phrase, "You reap what you sow"is good advice, Another phrase, "you are what you eat"is also good advice, for the subconscious mind, "you are what you think", So i try to be careful what i put into my body and my mind. When i wake up, i feel like half of my days work is already done, i, like the farmer, have to now put in the labour into processing it.
