Today my district cancelled school because of heavy snowfall, power outages, and just generally shitty driving conditions. Having lived on the cost for the better part of a decade, I've become accustom to the overreaction that comes with a half foot of snow. I'm not really complaining, though. As a kid I would pray every night for a blizzard so I could spend the day tobogganing instead of learning algebra. Little, has changed, it seems. My hometown would always boast that they haven't cancelled school in the last fifty years, and they would continue making everyone go to school unless the situation was dire. We never got one. Now it feels like I'm living in a fantasy world where I can have the day off and spend it at the bar eating brunch.
The last time this happened I was going to a different school every day, and the days previous had been real adventures getting to and from the schools that the regular employees felt they couldn't. Getting the day off was a huge relief, since my last call had me just about killed from all the parents playing car curling in the parking lot.
Nothing really beats going to bed with the childlike hope that you may get the day off because of weather, and then waking up to the muffled silence of a fresh snow and the excitement of a day ahead with so much potential.
