That's eggxactly how I view it as well. No matter how bitter it might sound or be, just let me hear it. Then it will be up to me to decide how to digest the whole thing.
I might be angry upon the revelation but I will be angrier if the truth is kept away from me.

Just like you said, the manner it gets revealed also has a hand in how the other party will take it.
