Today was an exciting at work. I have had a smile on my face all day long. After years of discussions and planning, my school has finally embarked on building a SPORTING FACILITY. This facility will be lead to the grounds extension of my school. It's been a long time coming and finally things are taking shape!
Physical education (PE) and training, including playing sports, is a crucial and fundamental activity that every child needs and must partake in. PE classes are not enough hence we've devised a sacrifice of five minutes per period on Wednesday to cater for extra for sports day. These are sometimes interrupted by abrupt meetings and other unforeseen circumstances. This has led to a decrease in educator participation during sports day Wednesdays. The new sports grounds will hopefully remedy this lack of interest.
There was a learner at our school who put the school on the map by competing at the national level in athletics. I wrote a short post about him a few weeks ago and added his pictures. He did us very proud. We wish that more learners will reach the level that he had but we knew that this will be difficult. It's not that we don't have talented learners, we do. We just don't have the necessary equipment and facilities to train the learners. This is about to change.
We have to go into the township local soccer grounds during school hours to hold eliminations and selections for the athletics every year because we don't have our grounds for such activities as a school. Most of the learners will arrive a the grounds hot, exhausted and hungry because it's quite a walking distance from our school to the grounds. Our selections aren't always fair because of those factors. Some learners don't even partake in these as they opt to go home rather than to go there. This will be the things of the past.
Our learners will finally stand a fighting chance against other schools come next year's athletics competition. I'm in the sports committee at my school so I wouldn't mind being elected the coordinator of the athletics committee next year. I already have plans of which sporting codes and athletics codes I want to implement. As you can tell I am overly excited about this and I can't wait for the completion of the sports facility.
