Paintball balls are known as the ammunition used by the weapons of this extreme sport. They are specifically designed so that its moderately soft surface is broken by hitting the body, spilling the interior of it on it. The balls are completely biodegradable so it does not threaten the environment where the sport is practiced.

The outer layer, or capsule, is organic and inside is the "paint", which is not such, but only food coloring and gelatin. Nor is it a problem when it comes to removing them from clothing, since the contents of the balls are soluble in water, so the stains come out very easily.

There are many types of paintball :

  • Those that glow in the dark to practice this sport at night,
  • Balls of various aromas.
  • Those designed to play in winter. This is fundamental since at low temperatures the balls can harden and become brittle (like an eggshell).

There are three types of ball groups: Field balls, competition balls and white marks (which are the worst quality).

In general, higher price balls are subject to stricter manufacturing processes and quality controls, which means that the ammunition maintains a constant size and shape.

This avoids various problems with the marker (weapon) resulting from conflicts between the caliber of the balls and that of the barrel that normally result in the breakage of the balls before leaving the weapon, causing the paint to remain inside and drip out, damaging to the effectiveness of the marker.

The best, and most expensive, also tend to have a thinner capsule, which allows breakage and release of the paint when it hits the body, preventing these balls from bouncing on it without breaking. They also have more opaque content, facilitating their display on clothes.

Special paintball balls for winter

Theoretically, the contents of paintballs cannot be frozen in adverse weather conditions. This is so since the water it contains is added a compound that drastically drops its freezing point. However, in cold environments, the capsule can shrink and dent the ball, decreasing its effectiveness.

Also, this capsule would become more brittle than in more favorable weather conditions. That is why there are special balls for cold environments that counteract these adversities.

Delicate use and storage

The balls for being a product very similar to the capsules of the pharmacy, need to be stored in good conditions of humidity and above all temperatures. They must be kept in a dry place at a temperature between 18 and 25 degrees for proper maintenance. In lower temperatures, the ball hardens and could be damaged and in higher temperatures, it can expand and deform.

Why should I never take paintball balls off the ground?

Balls should not be picked up from the ground during games for several reasons:

  • If the balls are dirty, they will break and jam the rest of the loader's balls.

  • If they have been outdoors, they may have hardened so it can be dangerous to shoot them, as they will not break and do much damage.

  • If the sun has hit them, they will have dilated so they will not enter the canyon and jam the marker.

One of the most annoying things during the paintball game is that the balls break inside the magazine. That makes everything pretend to paint and make it impossible to continue playing.

We must leave the game, disassemble the charger and clean everything. This can happen because the balls are very bad or because we are playing at low temperatures with normal balls instead of winter ones.
