Absolutely. I volunteered to be a pit crew for a friend that raced circle track about 25 years ago. The car broke an axle my first night. Another team gave us a spare axle shaft and we changed it between races. It is totally possible. Even though we fixed the axle with plenty time to spare, the clutch went out during the next race. That shut us down for the night. It was my first time on a pit crew and despite the bad luck, it was very exciting and totally worth it.
