오늘은 이더리움을 쉽게 설명하기 위한 비탈릭 부테린의 3분 길이의 이더리움 설명의 인터뷰 내용을 가져와습니다! 여러 사람들이 이더리움에 대해서 이야기를 나누고 정의하려고 하지만 창시자인 비탈릭 부테린의 입장에서 본 이더리움이란 어떤 의미를 가지고 있을지 궁금하지 않나요.

Vitalik Buterin created Ethereum when he was only 19 and interviewed from Disrupt SF in 2017. This interview explains what Ethereum is and why it is important to us breifly.

비탈릭 부테린은 19살에 이더리움을 창시했고 이 인터뷰는 2017년도에 Disrupt SF에서 진행되었습니다. 이 인터뷰는 비탈릭이 직접 일반인을 위한 이더리움을 쉽게 설명하려고 하는 내용이 담겨져 있습니다. 그럼, 이제 한 번 어린 나이의 비탈릭 부테린이 어떤 생각을 가지고 이더리움을 만들었고 우리에게 어떤 의미가 있는지를 그의 생각을 한 번 들여다 봅시다!

-비트코인을 알고있는 자와 그렇지 못한 자들

First of all, there are two kinds of average people: There is the average person who is already heard of Bitcoin and there’s an average person who hasn’t. I mean, the first category, it’s a bit easier because if you understand what bitcoin is, you understand that it’s a peer to peer digital currency and you understand that if you want to have a digital currency that’s decentralized then you need some kind of database to store how much money everyone has. 

일단 첫번째로 두 부류의 사람들이 있겠죠. 첫번째 그룹은 이미 비트코인을 들어본 자들과 그렇지 않은 자들. 비트코인을 이미 들어본 그룹한테는 이더리움을 쉽게 설명할 수 있겠죠. 그들이라면, P2P 디지털 화폐가 무엇인지를 이미 알고 있고 또한 탈중앙화된 화폐의 의미도 이미 알고있겠죠. 그런 다음에 우리에게 필요한 것은 모두가 얼마의 돈을 가지고 있는지를 알 수 있는 데이터베이스겠죠. 

► P2P란? 인터넷에서 개인과 개인이 직접 연결되어 파일을 공유하는 것

►탈중앙화된 화폐란? 중앙에서 벗어난, 여러명의 개인이 모두 같은 기록의 장부를 가지고 있는 화폐

-이중지출의 문제

Double spending problem

Like if I have 100 digital bitcoins or dollars..digital whatever cash, and I send 100 to you, and I also send the same 100 to someone else. Then those are two transactions, either one of which is illegal by itself. But both are which illegal in combination because it would be turning 100 units of cash into 200. This is the classic double spending problem in order to solve it, you Basically need to going to have some system that keeps track of, have these coins already been spent. How much money you actually have in any given time How much money do I have the right to spend at any given time. 자, 예를 들어 100개의 디지털 비트코인이든지 달러이든지 무엇이든지 간에 있다고 가정해봅시다. 내가 만약에 100을 당신에게 주고, 또 다시 똑같은 100을 또 한 번 준다면. 이 두 번의 거래는 모두 각각 잘못된 거겠죠. 왜냐하면 하나의 100을 2번 사용해서 200이라는 금액을 만들어냈으니까요. 이것이 바로 우리가 해결해야 했던 ‘이중지출’이라는 문제였었죠. 이 문제를 해결하기 위해서는 이 돈들이 어디로 흘러가는 지를 추적할 수 있는시스템이 필요했어요. 여태까지 얼마나 금액을 사용했는지, 실시간으로 얼마만큼의 금액을 갖고있는지, 얼마만큼의 금액을 내가 사용할 수 있는지 말이에요.

-사토시 나카모토의 등장

Very easy way to do this is centralized server But, if you wanna do this in a way that is decentralized which is, you know, Bitcoin’s original points in the spirit of, things like Bitorient. It’s actually very hard computer science problem to figure out how to do it. And Satoshi Nakamoto probably came up with the first solution that really is practical in this kind of open permission to contract which is Nakamoto blockchain and that was where the idea of blockchain technology in general came from. 

물론, 이중지출의 문제를 해결할 수 있는 가장 쉬운 방법은 중앙에 있는 하나의 서버를 사용하는 것이에요. 하지만, 탈중앙화된 방법을 사용한다면, 그거 있잖아요. 비트코인의 원조격인 포인트를 사용했던 ‘비트오리엔트’처럼의 방법을 사용한다면, 그건 컴퓨터 공학적으로는 굉장히 어려운 일이에요. 하지만, 이 방법을 가장 처음으로 실용화 할 수 있게 만든 사람은 사토시 나카모토에요. 사토시 나카모토는 오픈소스를 통해서 계약을 성사시킬 수 있게 하는 나카모토 블록체인을 만들었고 이러한 아이디어가 블록체인 기술의 핵심이라고 할 수 있어요.

-이더리움의 등장

Now where Ethereum comes from is basically you take that idea, the idea that you can use, what I call cryptoeconomics. So a combination of cryptographic algorithm, things like hashing into digital signature. In the kind of economical sense, keep systems like bitcoin going and use them to create decentralized networks with memory, so these kind of decentralized database like things for a whole bunch of other applications as well. 저는 이걸보고 암호화폐경제학이라고 부르는데요. 자, 이제 이러한 아이디어를 토대로 이더리움이 등장할거에요. 암호화된 알고리즘을 디지털 사인을 해시화해서 비트코인과 같은 시스템을 운영시켜요. 그리고 이걸 탈중앙화된 방법으로 저장시켜요. 이 탈중앙화되서 저장된 데이타를 여러가지에 응용해서 사용하는 거죠.

So around 2013, people started realizing that these blockchains are usuable for much more than peer to peer digital currency and the first major thing aside from Bitcoin was probably Namecoin which was trying to do peer to peer decentralized DNS, but then people started thinking, you know, can you do other kinds of digital assets? Can you do smart contracts? Can you do financial agreements? Can you do a registries about identity? Can you do all these other things? There are so many applications that building a blockchain for each one doesn’t really work, so the core idea behind the Ethereum is you can have a general purpose blockchain.

그래서 2013년도 쯤에 사람들은 깨달아요. ‘아! 블록체인이 P2P의 암호화폐 그 이상이구나!’라구요. 비트코인을 제외한 거물급 암호화폐인 네임코인이었어요. 네임코인은 P2P의 탈중앙화 된 DNS를 하기 시작했어요. 그러더니 사람들은 그렇다면 다른 디지털 자산도 할 수 있어? 스마트 컨트랙트는? 재정동의서는? 특허등록은? 그렇지만 이 모든 것을 각각 모두 따로 만드는 것은 딱히 잘 작동하지 않아요. 그래서 이더리움의 기본 가치는 일반적 사용이 가능한 블록체인을 만들자는 것이었어요.

- 기존의 어려움을 해결한 이더리움

We can have a blockchain where instead of the blockchain working with five different tools for five different categories of applications, you can have a blockchain that understands a general purpose programming language. 

5개의 다른 종류의 어플리케이션을 각각 5개의 다른 도구를 사용해서 블록체인을 만드는 대신에, 그냥 하나의 단일한 언어로 된 일반적인 목적을 위해 쓰일 수 있는 하나의 블록체인을 만드는 거에요.

So, you know, kind of like your phone. In your phone, you have an android or IOS and inside of Android and IOS, you can have apps. The Apps are written in whatever programming language that are written in. Anyone can create an app. Anyone can download an app and run it, so that was the kind of the general purpose of flexibility I was trying to bring into the blockchain world.

무슨 말이냐하면, 핸드폰 있잖아요. 핸드폰 안에는 안드로이드나 IOS가 있어요. 그러면 그 안에는 또 어플들이 있겠죠. 누구나 안드로이드나 IOS를 통해서어떤 어플이든지 만들어 낼 수 있고, 다운 받고, 실행시킬 수 있어요. 그리고 이게 바로 제가 블록체인 세계에 기여하고 싶었던 부분이었어요. 바로 어디에든 쓰일 수 있는 유연성이요.
