Symptoms of this condition vary between individuals.

  • For some, it shows with a painful intercourse. The vagina area becomes tight and painful.

  • To others, they may find it very difficult or impossible to allow penetration.

  • Others may discover they have this condition during gynecological examination. They would feel pain during such examination.

It is believed to be caused by physical stress, emotional stress or both.

Treatment:

Treatment of Vaginismus could be pelvic floor control, education and counselling, Emotional exercises, Insertion or dilation training and many others.

Let's look at some of the treatments mentioned above:

  • Pelvic floor control exercises: This is muscle contraction and relaxation activities. It help improve control of the pelvic floor emotional exercises, muscles.
  • Education and counseling: The individual can be educated about sexual anatomy and response cycle. This will help in understanding their pain and the processes their body is going through.
  • Emotional exercises: This is to help identify, express, and resolve any emotional factors that may be contributing to vaginismus.
  • Insertion or dilation training: This exercise it to help the woman learn how to use a plastic dilator, or a cone-shaped insert. If she can insert this without pain, the next step will be to leave it in for 10 to 15 minutes, to let the muscles get used to the pressure. Next, she can use a larger insert, and then she can teach her partner how to apply the insert. Source

While this is a problem, it should be noted that the number of women suffering from it are minimal.

Another good news is that it is treatable. If the causes are identified and worked on, a woman may be free from it and start enjoying her sexual life.
