In the original Steem roadmap there was a plan to implement confidential transactions (hides amount, not really that private but a step in the direction). Of course never implemented. These days it would probably make more sense to use the zcash shielded protocol instead.

There are definitely tradoffs. Exchanges hate it. That's an obstacle. Monero has been delisted or not listed where it would otherwise be based on volume and market cap.
