For small game I plan to use my Gamo pellet rifle. There is a video on YouTube of a Man hunting hogs using head shots, on feral animals. It's quiet (built in silencer) and damn lethal to anything smaller than a deer.
If I need a big hunting weapon, I will use my scoped, bolt action stuff. That will take anything on this continent! The AR9 is big enough bore for me on the AR platform. I like to carry a big iron on my hip too.
The hike is often this big iron, plus the .177 rifle. The Gamo has more kills than any gun I have, and is deadly out to 75 yards! The last racoon I shot here at home (they are on my shoot on sight list) had a 3/4" exit hole from that .177 pellet.
I like old school rifles over the AR style, as I can customize them to Fit me. Black composite stocks are a half way step, that retains the feel!
Weight is a secondary concern for me, as I don't plan to do a lot of hiking. When I go to ground, I plan to pull the hole in after me; so these will be for self defense.
But a lighter weapon, that's actually carried is better than a heavier one left home!
