Focus of the alphabet bureaucracy will crack a lot! If both sides are encrypted, it is much harder. If there is not much traffic (it's not my primary account) they will have little to compare for code cracking purposes!

Hardware backdoors are a hidden danger, and can be reduced by making the computer hard to reach. I place my computer downstream of a router, even with just one computer attached. The device one past the modem, can be visible to the wrong people. That way, they can see the router, but not my computer. Then they must guess....

Even though I'm an electrical engineer, I totally agree about less electronics in cars, I try to avoid that myself!
