Ever since I came across the quote "the way up is down", it has become one of my favorite quotes and has been guiding my actions as well. The quote was confusing at first and I think this was what inspired me in spending time to understand the message the quote actually passes.
Whenever I make this quote anywhere, I get sarcastic looks and sometimes comments from people. I wish they just understood what I was saying or even made an attempt to ask what I meant. Anyway, I'll be sharing what the quote means to me in some areas of life.
Firstly, saying "the way up is down " depicts humility to me. The holy book of Islam and Christianity even encourages this. For example, the Bible teaches us to "humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord and He shall lift us up ". So tell me how a proud person would be lifted up when he / she has already lifted himself / herself up. Most of us are used to the popular saying that says "pride goes before a fall", this simply tells us that a proud person would most likely be brought to a fall by one thing or another and that is one reason why it pays to be humble.
Being humble paves ways so many people expects to be closed. Nobody wants to associate with a proud person no matter who he/she is and one can only imagine what such person (the proud person) might lose from such bad attitude.
Secondly, saying "the way up is down " interprets another thing to me that most people take for granted in the world we live in today; and that's the habit of taking people at the lower end of the working cadre for granted. People like: securities, drivers, cleaners and so on. They are humans and should be accorded the same respect accorded to every other human irrespective of their status.
As a matter of fact, one cannot even get into some organizations let alone get to see the person at the topmost position without passing through the security guards. Although some of them can be rude and all but it still pays to be nice at the end of the day. Some drivers or even cleaners have a very good relationship with their boss that you never could tell how they can be of great help to you just by recommending you to their boss.
In conclusion, when we look at life in itself critically, we'll see that "the way up is truly down ". Like, you don't start anything; be it business, relationships, building a house and so on from the top; you start from the bottom before you to the top. Therefore, in anything we do, let's be humble and be willing to endure the growth process of whatever we've started or will start.
