Holiday is over for most of us and we're all back at work, smiling and hugging each other (even though some of us don't really like ourselves). But it's a new year and we are still in that "IGG" (intinial gra gra - initial overactiveness) spirit of the good behavior we promised ourselves to be of in the new year. Now, let's pause and ask ourselves: how long will the friendliness last (since it's not real for some of us).

The work environment can be a fun environment but we can not also deny the fact that it can be very stressful, annoying and depressing sometimes.

Nothing gives a person greater peace than being at peace with people around him/her. For instance, I as a person would always feel that my heart skips a beat when I see someone I have issues with (whether I'm on the right or wrong side in the issue). Although, you will never see me express the feeling in any sort of way on my face. I'll remain as calm as possible and my face would remain as straight as a ruler. Sometimes, I'll even act like I didn't see the person or he/she doesn't even exists. But, all that is just a camouflage. My mind is really not at rest because I'm having some sort of misunderstanding with that person. I know this applies to most of us even though we lie to ourselves sometimes that we don't care about the person or we are at peace with ourselves for keeping malice.

We cannot escape relating with people in our lives, be it in the church, at school or at work because we are humans and that makes us naturally social creatures. Although, we can escape having issues when we relate with these people at the level each of them belong. For instance, the way you'll relate with a church member would be quite different from the way you'll relate with a childhood friend; this also applies to the way you'll relate with colleagues at work.

Yes, your work place is a serious place. Some people are of the opinion that you are there to make money and not friends. I do not totally agree with that because I think if you love your job, you'll want to grow and develop in that career/field; and this is where good work relationship (asides from your qualifications and abilities) comes to play. For instance, if your boss doesn't trust or like you, it's not likely for him/ her to consider you when a new position opens up. Even if your boss likes you and your colleagues do not like you, when you are finally considered for the new opening, your colleagues, who do not like you might frustrate you in every possible way they can. So why go through all these stress when you can just have a good working relationship with your boss and colleagues?

TIPS ON BUILDING /MAINTAINING A PROFESSIONAL WORKING RELATIONSHIP

* Set And Manage Boundaries : While building your work relationship, set and manage your boundaries. It's good that people know what you like and what you don't so that they will also know how to relate with you; but when they don't, you should expect to be offended by them at some point.

* Avoid Gossiping rather, talk to people you're not cool with face to face

* Appreciate Them Genuinely When They Help You Or Do Something Well

* Identify What You Need From Others And What They Need From You

* Be Positive: nobody wants to associate himself/herself with a negative person

*Listen More Than You Talk.
