Everyone is talking about having to hustle and grind. How success grows when you “get after it.” It’s a type of attitude to work fast, work hard, and hustle till you get it done. It’s the thing a do-it-yourself entrepreneur should have if they want to stay committed to success. A hustler is someone who can get after it and make the right moves in order to succeed. But I’m old school, and I think hustling and grinding should only be a dance from the 70s.

Success is a lifestyle. It is about living a different lifestyle, not about a McMansion, Lambo, and “look at my jet”, lifestyle.

A success lifestyle is when you move from ambition to mission. When you have a mission, your success is both material and spiritual. You’re not simply in it to win it, you’re in it to transform and evolve it.

When you have a mission, you are building something that is bigger than yourself and that benefits the world. It is the land of genius for the benefit of humanity. It has roots in your heart, mind, and practicality. You never need to push yourself into the hustle and grind. You are led by something greater than yourself. When you have a mission, you set the standard and become the bar of achievement that hustlers and grinders are working to be like.

When you hustle and grind, you may be in it to win, but a lot of times hustlers and grinders “meet them and cheat them”. Many hustlers don’t have a good reputation. Leaders on a mission do. When you move from ambition to mission you are in to live it and be it. Hustle and grind are temporary actions you do until you get it done. Ambition to mission is the continuous journey of becoming better and helping others get better. Mission lasts a lifetime.

It’s building a brand that serves the world like Richard Branson’s, “Virgin” or Oprah Winfrey’s, “OWN”. It’s about leaving the world in a better place with your business, like Elon Musk ventures to do every day. Yes, leaders win, but they also love. When you have a mission, you build long-term wealth and public loyalty because people know you are doing something to serve humanity. When you hustle and grind, you just make more money.

When you have a mission, you can develop authentic self-esteem as each year the mission lifts you to more greatness. That is the difference between hustle and grind and ambition to mission. While hustle and grind can lead to success, ambition to mission is day-to-day greatness. It is the building of an extraordinary leader that leaves a legacy.

Somewhere on your journey of hustle and grind, you will benefit by asking yourself, “Now that I have success, how can I unleash my greatness?” You might want to be a part of something that is greater than yourself and leave your legacy. In the words from the movie, “The Blues Brothers”, with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, “We’re on a mission from God!”
