각계에서 쏟아지는 비관론으로 인해 투자심리가 위축되고 있다. 이날도 금융당국의 규제에서 벗어나 있는데서 오는 혼란과 늘어나고 있는 스캠(사기행위)으로 인해 암호화폐산업 자체가 하나의 웃음거리(farce)로 전락하고 있다고 닐 캐시캐리 미니애폴리스 연방준비은행 총재가 꼬집었다.

캐시캐리 총재는 미시건주 에스캐나바에 있는 배이칼리지에서의 강연에서 “규제 받지 않는 혼란과 늘어나는 사기로 인해 암호화폐산업은 하나의 웃음거리로 전락하고 있다”고 지적했다. 그는 “처음에 암호화폐라는 것을 고안해 낸 일부 현명한 사람들이 있었지만 지금에 와서는 우스꽝스러운 극단으로 치닫고 있다”고 말했다. 또 “새로운 암호화폐를 만들어내기 위한 진입장벽은 거의 제로(0) 수준까지 떨어졌다”며 아무나 암호화폐를 새롭게 찍어내는 암호화폐공개(ICO)에 나서는 현실을 꼬집었다. 캐시캐리 총재는 “새로 암호화폐를 찍어내는 사람은 ‘나는 너에게 하나의 코인을 팔았고 나머지 9억9900만개는 내가 들고 있으니 난 이제 억만장자가 됐다’고 말할 수도 있다”며 “암호화폐가 유용한 무엇인가가 되기 이전 단계에서부터 훨씬 더 많은 잡음과 사기가 나타나고 있다”고 지적했다.

다만 캐시캐리 총재는 암호화폐나 블록체인에 대한 회의론자는 아니었다. 그는 “그렇다고 암호화폐가 언제까지나 웃음거리가 될 것이라는 뜻은 아니다”며 “사라지는 코인들이 생기면서 시장은 한번의 급락세를 보인 뒤 어느 정도의 코인만 생존하게 될 것”이라며 적자생존이 이 시장에서도 나타날 것으로 점쳤다. 또 “블록체인과 그 기반 기술은 매우 흥미롭고 비트코인 그 자체보다 훨씬 더 큰 잠재력을 가지고 있다고 본다”고도 말했다.

아울러 5조1000억달러에 이르는 자금을 운용하는 뱅가드그룹내 전략부문을 맡고 있는 뱅가드인베스트먼트 스트래티지그룹 글로벌 대표 겸 글로벌 수석 이코노미스트인 조 데이비스는 17세기 네덜란드에서 일어난 튤립 버블을 거론하며 “비트코인 역시 그 가치가 제로(0)까지 떨어질 수 있으며 현재는 버블 상태에 놓여 있다”고 지적했다. 그는 “암호화폐는 부분적으로 하나의 회계단위이거나 교환 매개수단 정도가 될 순 있지만 화폐가 아니며 심지어 가치저장수단도 못된다”며 “미래에 틈새시장에서 어느 정도 사용될 순 있지만 크게 성행할 것 같진 않다”고 지적했다.

But Coinbase’s move is likely to raise eyebrows, since many investors view high-speed traders with suspicion. Critics like Michael Lewis, author of the 2014 best-seller “Flash Boys,” have alleged that HFT firms take advantage of slower-moving players.Coinbase will ensure that HFT firms aren’t given any unfair advantages, said Adam White, general manager of Coinbase’s exchange, called GDAX.

After the upgrade is complete, processing times at Coinbase will be measured in microseconds, or millionths of a second, Mr. White said. Greater participation by electronic traders will boost the depth of Coinbase’s markets and help the company win over big institutional traders, such as hedge funds, which are increasingly interested in trading crypto, Mr. White added.

LMAX, which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, is seeking to outflank fledgling crypto start-up exchanges whose rapid growth has sparked concerns among traders over their technological reliability, security and money laundering controls. A more secure market infrastructure for trading cryptocurrencies is seen as encouraging a more active presence by current users such as hedge funds, proprietary traders and wealthy individuals. LMAX also expects this will eventually encourage banks, asset managers and sovereign wealth funds to enter the market.
