Here in the land of beavers and bacon, fall is fast approaching. The daylight hours are getting shorter, and the air is starting to get cooler... a welcome relief for my wife I might add. (That's another story)
Yes friends, I speak of Canada, my home and native land. Already the children are preparing for that all important season, the real season, the most important season of them all here in Canada, Hockey season.Whether it be road hockey, pond hockey, or at the local rinks, the boys, and even some girls look forward to this time of the year. This is that time of year that all look forward to here in this the Great White North.
Doctors are smiling to themselves as they await injury patients, and dentists are dreaming of long vacations, new sailboats, and golf clubs from profits made from the loss of young teens losing teeth whether by stick or by puck.
Many of us have lost teeth to our beloved game, but then we have lost, or rather the herd has been thinned over the years, because some children failed to grasp the meaning of the word "CAR" when playing road hockey. A sad event, but one must move on. I might add no one ever received a trophy for being stupid! Then no one ever received a trophy for just showing up and playing the game, at least not when I was young.
Now I am at the official "spectator age"or as some call it, geezer status, though some call it the golden years, why, I have no idea. Whether I hobble my way off to the local rink to watch, or sit back in my favorite chair and watch on TV, participating or watching Hockey here, is almost compulsory. I've heard rumours it will be made compulsory if the latest premier of Ontario has his way...this is the guy that ran a platform on, "a buck a beer!" He got my vote, but he's known for being a bit of a jackass.
So while many fellow Canucks my age and above migrate to places warmer for the winter, the snowbirds I believe they are called, I call them quitters, I will break out my favorite long underwear, maybe a snowmobile suit, and head out to the local rinks to take in a game now and then. When I can't go, I will sit around in my favourite PJ pants and hockey jersey, and watch while sitting back drinking a beer and holler at the TV set as if the refs, players and coaches can hear me!
