Just a correction: Light is included in the shadow part. What you are pointing as light in painting is called "Highlight" pointing at 90 degrees to the source of light. Probably not your native language but that is the norm to reference to it. And usually you wanna go with midtones over halftones which is used in other forms of art so yeah there's that. Its weird you don't know that shit. Its basic.
