The weather is warming up, flowers are blooming, trees are budding and daylight hours are lengthening. Here comes spring! I see new life in our backyard - some spring flowers - whites, reds, and yellows mingling with the greens.
The yellow cymbidium orchids in containers are in bloom - in some pots at least; still waiting for the latecomers. We repot and divide our orchids from time to time, although they like to be pot bound. Arranged together, don’t they make a good view from a dining room window?
The red flowers of the kalanchoes, aka flaming Katy are also coming out. We planted cuttings in two planter boxes and placed them in the shade near a citrus tree. The previous year we inadvertently left them in full sun, so the flowers wilted quickly. Lesson learned.
Even the citrus blossoms are back! Although not quite colorful, they give off that fragrant smell - rich and sweet, similar to jasmine. Sometimes it comes out too strong and heady, especially if there are three trees blooming at the same time. Our dwarf orange tree yielded many sweet fruits last year. Hoping for a repeat.
Our five-year-old plum tree by the fence has sprung back to life and is bursting with white flowers and tiny shoots attracting pollinating bees. Fruits in the offing?
The bougainvillea on the side of the house is also teeming with red flowers. In the last 20 years, it has been very resilient; it was felled by a strong wind years ago and was reduced almost to a stump, but it survived and has grown back. It keeps on giving. Hubby likes to trim it like a mushroom.
Elsewhere around the perimeter of the house, there are flowers of the perennials African iris, hibiscus, geranium, and euphorbia.
Around the neighborhood, the Japanese flowering cherries are also brimming with double pink blossoms and are incredibly beautiful. When the wind blows, the fallen flowers lay a rosy carpet on the ground!! And here come the showy peach blossoms as well - hot pink petals with deep magenta in the center.
Spring is easily the most beautiful of seasons. It brings color to the world. Get ready and excited!
