La semana pasada, cuando visité el genial post de @sagesigma, le dije que traería algo realmente antiguo para este #ttt, y eso es lo que he traído hoy: Un vinilo que fue de mi abuelo, y que quedó conmigo. Se trata de un disco del gran Glenn Miller, en esta oportunidad con su Army Air Force Band. A mi criterio, Miller fue uno de los mejores músicos estadounidenses que hayan existido, y quien en su exitosa carrera dejó un inmenso legado musical.
Last week, when I visited @sagesigma's cool post, I told him that I would bring something really old for this #ttt, and that's what I brought today: A vinyl that belonged to my grandfather, and that stayed with me. It is an album by the great Glenn Miller, this time with his Army Air Force Band. In my opinion, Miller was one of the best American musicians who ever lived, and who in his successful career left an enormous musical legacy.
No recuerdo la primera vez que oí alguna melodía de Glenn Miller, porque en mi casa, era usual que se oyera gran variedad de música de calidad. Además, las melodías de Miller muchas veces ambientaban alguna antigua película de las que se transmitían en TV. En todo caso, es muy raro que alguna persona nacida luego de 1940 no haya oído alguna vez una canción de Miller y su banda. Cabe señalar que Miller tenía una banda civil con la cual le iba muy bien, y a la cual renunció cuando se decidió enlistar en el ejército estadounidense, en donde pasó a formar una banda militar. Este disco es de la banda militar, con la cual se mantuvo muy activo, e incluso transmitía y viajaba constantemente con ella para entretener a las tropas. Un dato curioso, es que la banda militar era más completa que la civil, pues incluyó también una sección de cuerdas.
I don't remember the first time I heard a Glenn Miller melody, because in my house, it was usual to hear a wide variety of quality music. In addition, Miller's tunes often set the scene for an old movie that was broadcast on TV. In any case, it is very rare that someone born after 1940 has not ever heard a song by Miller and his band. It should be noted that Miller had a civilian band with which he did very well, and which he resigned when he decided to enlist in the US Army, where he went on to form a military band. This record is from the military band, with which he was very active, and even broadcast and traveled constantly with it to entertain the troops. A curious fact is that the military band was more complete than the civilian one, since it also included a string section.
Este disco no estoy segura de que lo haya traído mi abuelo luego de su exilio en Estados Unidos, en donde vivió algunos años. A él siempre le gustó la radio, siempre estuvo vinculado a ese mundo, así que no era raro que trajese vinilos; aunque también hay la posibilidad de que lo comprase después, ya estando en Venezuela; lo cierto es que él siempre tuvo montañas de discos y los disfrutaba mucho. Si observan con cuidado, en la esquina superior derecha, la carátula tiene adosada unas etiquetas, las cuales se usaban para identificar los discos, en la estación radial A.M. en la cual trabajó mi abuelo por varios años. Era la famosa Radio Nacional de Venezuela.
I'm not sure that this record was brought by my grandfather after his exile in the United States, where he lived for a few years. He always liked the radio, he was always linked to that world, so it was not uncommon for him to bring vinyl; although there is also the possibility that he bought it later, already being in Venezuela; the truth is that he always had mountains of records and he enjoyed them a lot. If you look carefully, in the upper right corner, the cover has some labels attached, which were used to identify the discs, at the AM radio station. where my grandfather worked for several years. It was the famous National Radio of Venezuela.
Ya tenemos mucho tiempo sin hacer ejercicios de arqueología moderna, y hoy será igual, porque desconozco el precio de este vinilo; sin embargo, podemos ver algunos detalles interesantes de este bello disco. Lo primero que resalta es la preciosa foto de la portada, en donde podemos ver a una hermosa mujer bailando muy feliz con un guapo hombre. Esta foto fue tomada por un fotógrafo estadounidense del pasado siglo XX, quien fue muy famoso. Se trata de Murray Laden, quien tuvo una larga y prolífica carrera. Esta foto me parece genial.
We have not done modern archeology exercises for a long time, and today it will be the same, because I don't know the price of this vinyl; however, we can see some interesting details of this beautiful record. The first thing that stands out is the beautiful photo on the cover, where we can see a beautiful woman dancing very happily with a handsome man. This photo was taken by an American photographer of the last 20th century, who was very famous. This is Murray Laden, who had a long and prolific career. This photo looks great.
Si seguimos detallando la portada, allí vemos los nombres de las 11 canciones que conforman a este disco titulado Marvelous Miller Moods, que si mis ojos no me engañan, es del año 1957, o sea ¡66 años de existencia! Por el reverso tendremos la información de la banda: Cada una de las tres secciones (con fotos incluidas) y los nombres de los soldados y oficiales que le conformaban. También presenta la información de cada uno de los lados del vinilo, o sea, las canciones de cada lado. Como dato importante, no todas las canciones de Miller incluían voces, muchas eran solamente instrumentales, y esto lo podemos observar en este disco, en donde encontramos de ambos tipos.
If we continue detailing the cover, there we see the names of the 11 songs that make up this album entitled Marvelous Miller Moods, that if my eyes do not deceive me, it is from the year 1957, that is, 66 years of existence! On the back we will have the information of the band: Each one of the three sections (with photos included) and the names of the soldiers and officers that formed it. It also presents the information for each of the sides of the vinyl, that is, the songs on each side. As an important fact, not all of Miller's songs included voices, many were only instrumental, and we can see this on this album, where we find both types.
Aquí podemos ver el vinilo. Está muy deteriorado, es cierto, sin embargo es una joya. También podemos ver que fue fabricado por la discográfica RCA Victor, y aquellas canciones que se incluyeron en alguna banda sonora de alguna película, se identifica al lado de la canción.
Here we can see the vinyl. It is very run down, it is true, however it is a gem. We can also see that it was manufactured by the RCA Victor record company, and those songs that were included in a soundtrack of a movie are identified next to the song.
Ahora vamos con mis canciones / Now let's go with my songs
En honor a la verdad, no puedo decir que las canciones de Miller me encantan, eso sería mentir, pero sí agradezco haberlas oído de niña, especialmente porque mi oído se acostumbró a seguir la melodía de cada instrumento que componía a esta big band por separado, lo que me permitió apreciar mejor la riqueza y belleza musical. Sin embargo, he elegido tres melodías instrumentales que me parecen hermosas. La primera es "Farewell Blues" y ésta se ubica en el tercer surco del lado A del vinilo. Es una canción, hermosa que permite que cada sección e instrumento se expresen por breves períodos, tomando el protagonismo. Comienza suave y luego varía el ritmo, teniendo picos interesantes, para luego finalizar de manera suave también.
In all honesty, I can't say that I love Miller's songs, that would be lying, but I do appreciate having heard them as a child, especially since my ear got used to following the melody of each instrument that made up this big band separately, which allowed me to better appreciate the musical richness and beauty. However, I have chosen three instrumental melodies that I find beautiful. The first one is "Farewell Blues" and this one is located in the third groove of side A of the vinyl. It's a beautiful song that allows each section and instrument to express itself for brief periods, taking center stage. It starts soft and then varies the rhythm, having interesting peaks, and then it ends softly as well.
La siguiente canción se titula "Pearls on velvet" y está en el quinto surco del lado A del vinilo. Esta canción me parece de una belleza muy sutil, en donde el piano y la sección de cuerdas combinan estupendamente, aunque el piano es protagonista sin duda alguna. Aquí les dejo el audio para que lo disfruten.
The next song is titled "Pearls on velvet" and is on the fifth groove of side A of the vinyl. This song seems to me to be of a very subtle beauty, where the piano and the string section combine wonderfully, although the piano is undoubtedly the protagonist. Here I leave the audio for you to enjoy.
Para finalizar, compartiré con ustedes esta hermosa canción titulada “Hollyday for Strings”, la cual se ubica en el último surco del lado B del vinilo. Es una melodía con una gran riqueza musical, en donde podemos apreciar las distintas secciones de esta big band. Me encanta como suenan las cuerdas, es muy interesante. Les dejo el audio de esta hermosura.
Finally, I will share with you this beautiful song titled “Hollyday for Strings” , which is located in the last groove of the B-side of the vinyl. It is a melody with great musical richness, where we can appreciate the different sections of this big band. I love how the strings sound, it's very interesting. I leave you the audio of this beauty.
