I don't think being a haven for expert voices to be heard takes away from the person on the street. I think they synergize.
I'm half joking, maybe considerably less, when I say I've "challenged" experts on reddit simply by haphazardly tossing out potential misinformation. Experts want us to be educated and average questions from the person on the street is how info travels most freely, I think.
