Blood group maybe defined as the classification of blood base on the presence and absence of antibodies and of inherited antigenic particule on the surface of red blood cells
Accorfing to INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLOOD TRANSFUSION (ISBT) we have a total of 35 human blood group system which include the followings; ABO groups , Rh blood groups, M & N blood, Lutheran, Lewis , Kell, Kidd, Duffy, Diego, Dombrock, Colton, Ii, P, Xg, Yt etc.
We have two most importance one. They are ABO and RhD antigen.
Antigen maybe glycoproteins, glycolipids, proteins and carbohydrates.
Base on the blood group, they can also present on the surface of cells and tissus.
ABO (A,B,AB,and O) and RhD( + , - , or null donation RhD status) determine someone blood group.
M & N group use to determine paternity.
