INFANCY:
It is difficult to tell whether the cry of a new born baby is as a result of anger, fear, hunger or pain. the expressions of emotions seems alike. Emotional responses are usually in the form of general excitement. By 2 months, the baby begins to produce different cries to express different things - hunger, pain, discomfort.
At 3 months, he display delight and distress. Thus the general excitement becomes differentiated into delight and distress. Delight can be caused by patting, caressing, mother's touch. Response to it is in form of smiles, kicking of hands and legs. Distress on the other hand is caused by hunger, pain, loneliness. With increase in age, the feeling of distress is redefined into recognizable fear, disgust and anger while delight is redefined into some pleasant emotions like love, joy affection etc. The characteristic of the emotion of the infant are : Reaction to stimuli are over-exaggerated. For example, he can cry very heavily for minor case. If the mother or caregiver leaves him alone in the room to pick something. Looking around, the baby feels lonely and cries as if badly pinched or stringed by ant. Secondly, the temper of the infant flares quickly but subsides quickly too.
The common emotion expressed by infants include anger, fear, joy, affection. The infant become angry when his wish is not met. He may respond by screaming, kicking of legs, hitting anything within reach. By the second year, he can jump up and down or throw himself on the floor. Joy is initially caused by physical well-being.
