Primate Cathedral of America | Catedral Primada de América ⛪

ENG

My first visit was to America's first cathedral, where I was able to visit during the day and night. It is an incredible place full of history. 🙏⛪

The full name of the Cathedral of Santo Domingo is "Catedral Metropolitana Santa María de La Encarnación, Primada de América". It is the main monument of the Dominican capital, and is located in Parque Colón, in front of the Christopher Columbus Monument. It is the oldest church in the New World. 🚢📜🏰

Numerous architects worked on it, it being mainly Gothic, although different architectural styles can be seen: The vault is Gothic, the arches are Romanesque and the decoration is Baroque. It has three access doors: 🚪
A) the Main one communicates directly with Parque Colón and is Gothic in style. 🚪🔑
B) the Main Door is Plateresque style, which is accessed through an atrium. 🚪🔑
C) The Puerta del Perdón or Geraldini Gate, located to the south in the Plazoleta de los Curas, has a legend: It is said that political prisoners, upon passing through this gate, were automatically pardoned.
🚪🔑

One of the most impressive elements is the vaulted ceiling, as well as its fourteen side chapels that contain murals, stained glass windows and crypts, such as the Baptism or the Blessed Sacrament. The Cathedral houses numerous tombs, among which the Mausoleum of Archbishop Meriño, the tomb of Rodrigo de Bastidas and the tomb of Bishop Alessandro Geraldini are worth highlighting. It also housed the ashes of Cristobal Colón, but they were moved to the Colón Lighthouse in 1992. 🚢📜🏰

Church of Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes | Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Las Mercedes Mercedes 🙏❤️

ENG

The third stop was at this beautiful Gothic church, a majestic architectural work of the colonial city. It is one of the three oldest churches in Santo Domingo, built in the second quarter of the 16th century ⛪🙏❤️😍

The church of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, a beautiful structure from the 16th century, was known in colonial times as the Church of the Mother of God. Its construction began in 1527 and finished in 1555, that is, it took approximately 28 years to build. ⛪

The church is divided from the central nave into the presbytery area by the "triumphant arch", built in ashlar stone that visually separates the area of the faithful from the sacred space. This design pays ode to the old triumphal arch of the early Christian basilica, a space where the most significant sacred images painted or executed in mosaics were located. ♥️😍❤️
