Hello I'm Dr. Shelley Sommerfeldt, psychologist and relationship coach with the Loving Roots Project and today I wanted to discuss the importance of maintaining self in a relationship. Holding on to yourself while in a relationship means that you're maintaining your own identity as well as taking care of yourself, your own needs, and your own goals. This is an important component of self-care. This is something that can actually lead to relationship happiness as well. It's much more common that when people face challenges in their relationship, they focus on repairing the issues between the two people and while that is extremely important and you won't be able to resolve relationship conflict without doing that, it's important not to forget that you also have to focus on each party.

That means each person should be working on themselves. Remember, a healthy relationship cannot exist without two healthy people. Actually working on yourself is a critical component to relationship betterment. There are several components of maintaining self while in a relationship and here are some examples. First, take time for you. Taking time for yourself is one of the most essential parts of being a healthy person. So be sure that you're making that a priority. That you're taking care of yourself. Your own self-care means taking into account your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Again people tend to focus on the well-being of their relationship and yes that is extremely important, it's also important that you put emphasis into your own well-being.

And next, maintain your own identity and interests. People often have a misconception that they need to spend all of their time with their partner and share all of the same interests. While sharing interests can be exciting and make the relationship fun, because you get to enjoy things together, it's also okay to have differences and separate interests and activities. So be sure that you're holding true to your own identity, even while in a relationship and have some separate activities and time with friends that's just for you.

And next, surround yourself with healthy people. Many people can become negatively influenced by unhealthy people in their life. So make sure that you surround yourself with positive and supportive friends and family. This means reducing drama and negativity around you. Be a loving person to yourself, your partner, and others. It's been shown that the more positive energy that you put out in the world, the more you will receive. So focus on being the best version of yourself that you can be and treat others with kindness and compassion. And last, find balance. Maintaining good balance in your life means juggling your self-identity, your relationship, your work, your physical health, your friends, etc.

This means that if things have gotten out of balance with something in your life, such as your health or your friendships, then work on getting it back in balance. When things get out of balance in that way, it can really impact the health of our relationship as well. So I hope these things can help you maintain a good healthy self in your relationship .
