I am glad that my posts about Tuscan villages generate a lot of interest, so today I want to share with you another interesting discovery of another village called Barberino Val d'Elsa. It is located between the important Chianti area and the Val d'Elsa, which, from a naturalistic perspective, is a beautiful area. Of course, I will take you with me virtually through the photos I have taken and try to tell you a bit about the history of this place.
Barberino Val d'Elsa is definitely a perfect destination to relax, and in my opinion, the best time to visit is the last week of May when the medieval festival takes place. This way, you can participate in the historical reenactment and see people dressed in period costumes. Barberino Val d'Elsa has a very important history and a quite glorious past, being one of the outposts of the Florentine Republic since 1054. As a village, it is well-maintained, and I must say that walking through its cobbled streets feels wonderful.
Certainly, the first striking thing is the Porta Fiorentina, which is not the original one but was rebuilt because it was blown up during World War II by the Germans. Moreover, I discovered that there are underground passages in the historic center that served in case of an enemy assault for the villagers to escape. But above all, from this village, you can admire the panorama of the splendid Tuscan hills. This is a place definitely suitable for those who enjoy cycling, as there are many beautiful routes to explore.
Unfortunately, like many other villages I've talked about, this one is at risk of depopulation because it is used mainly for vacation homes. Just yesterday, I saw an advertisement in New York about Italian villages, and I hope that visiting beautiful Italian villages becomes a trend in 2024 among tourists. I also hope to have the opportunity to explore many more because they are not only in Tuscany.
