From 1916 through 1947, The United States Mint produced the Walking Liberty half dollar, a coin with a face value of fifty cents. Adolf A. Weinman created the coin, which took the place of Charles E. Barber's previous Barber half-dollar design. For the purpose of replacing the dimes, quarters, and half dollars, Mint Director Robert W. Woolley requested that the Commission of Fine Arts hold a design competition. The winning design was created by Weinman and included an eagle sitting on a rock for the reverse and Lady Liberty walking toward the sun for the obverse.

Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints produced Liberty Walking half dollars for the US Mint. On the face of the coin, immediately below the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST," the mint inscribed the mint marks for coins struck in Denver (D) and San Francisco (S). The mint relocated the mintmark to the back of the coin's lower left quadrant about halfway through 1917. For the year 1917, this led to the creation of two versions.

alt

All three mints continued to produce through 1921. The mint occasionally produced half dollars between 1922 and 1933. From that point on, all three of the mint's facilities continued to produce them until 1947. A entire date and mintmark collection of Walking Liberty half dollars in circulated condition can be put together by an intermediate coin collector for a reasonable price. In uncirculated form, a full set of coins organized by year and mintmark should be the goal of an experienced coin collector.
