Better late than never as they say! The popular coin I will show today is always late! They always come late in the year.

The 1 oz Silver Libertad Brilliant Uncirculated coin was first introduced in 1982, and has been produced annually since its introduction.

La Casa de Moneda de México, the oldest Mint in North America, produced these silver coins in different sizes and finishes, but the 1 oz Silver Libertad is historically a standard for investors.

The image of Winged Victory appears on the obverse of the 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coins. The Greek and Roman goddess Nike, sometimes known as Victoria, served as the model for the figure of Victory. After Mexico defeated Spain in its independence battle, the nation took up the worship of Victory, a figure revered by winning generals. She appears on the reverse of the coins, with Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl's mountain peaks in the distance.

Coin Highlights:

  • 41st coin in the 1 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Series!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .999 pure silver in BU condition.
  • On the obverse is the Mexican coat of arms.
  • The reverse features Winged Victory.

The national coat of arms is depicted on the back of the Mexican Silver Libertad coin. An eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus is attempting to consume a rattlesnake. The current emblem is shown with ten old historic seals of the same seal surrounding it.

Mexican Libertad Coins are unique among bullion coin collections for a number of reasons, but one of the most obvious is a lack of a noted face value on the coins. Like the South African Krugerrand Coins, the Mexican Libertad Coins are considered legal tender by the issuing nation, but the Libertad boasts a floating face value based on the price of silver per ounce on a given day. This is the opposite of coins such as the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, British Britannia, and Chinese Panda collections.

In terms of sales in a single year, the 1992 issue of the 1 oz Silver Libertad Series remains the highest-minted date as of 2023, having sold over 2.4 million pieces.

For a few years now, I've been aware of this. As far as I'm aware, libertads are the priciest standard silver bullion coin in existence. Standard bullion is defined as the regular issue of the relevant mint, usually BU, free of any unique numismatic features such as proof finishes, limited edition designs, or privies.

The Libertad are priced between $1.50 and $2.00 higher than the Eagles, which are already costly. When compared to Maples or Britannia, Eagles are much more expensive since the US Mint charges its authorized distributors a flat $2.00 premium over spot.

It doesn't make sense to me because the Libertad aren't particularly noteworthy in terms of design or quality. The Libertad is as refined, great resolution, design, and striking... these are features shared by the American Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf, Philharmonics, Britannia, Krugerrand, and Kangaroo; some of them are even 9999 pure.

I think that people will continue to buy them, so they will charge what the market will bear. Simple use of capitalism.
