The Central Bank of Malta's coat of arms can be seen on the reverse of the 2023 Malta Silver Golden Eagle Coin. The coat of arms of Malta is in the center of the bank's seal, flanked by two knights. The seal has an olive and palm branch wreath with a Maltese star behind a field.

Introduced to Malta by the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem upon taking possession of the islands in 1530, the Maltese Cross has become an intrinsic part of Malta’s culture and heritage, as well as a much-cherished symbol by the Maltese.

After Malta gained independence from British domination on April 17, 1968, the Central Bank of Malta was founded. It took the place of the Currency Board, which had been active since 1825. The bank received full central banking authority and assumed control over monetary policy as well as maintaining the stability of the Maltese currency.
