For the first time in over 70 years, a new monarch was crowned in Britain on May 6, 2023. The United Kingdom has not experienced the grandeur and history of a coronation event since February 1953, when his mother, the late Elizabeth II, was formally crowned.

The longest-reigning heir apparent to the British throne, Charles III, also known by his full name Charles Philip Arthur George, is the eldest son of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. From 1958 until the death of his mother on September 8, 2022, he held the title of Prince of Wales.

Elizabeth II eldest son, Charles, Price of Wales, has finally became king. But at 73, the focus of his reign will be his age, the declining influence of the monarchy around the world. Charles has spent is life virtually as heir apparent and has become a familiar figure in his own right, even as he starts a new job when most people have retired. But in stark contrast to the neutrality his mother observed, he has at times courted controversy with strongly held views that made him a more outspoken, divisive figure.1

Tradition has it that at coronations, kings and queens swear vows to God and the people they rule over.

Charles took the coronation oath, in which he swore to govern each of his countries according to their respective laws and customs, to administer law and justice with mercy, and to uphold Protestantism in the United Kingdom and protect the Church of England. Subsequently, he made the statutory accession declaration.2

For most people, an occasion like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to gather together and mark a new era. Medals for coronations have been produced by the Royal Mint for many years since Edward VI's reign.
