The Gold Nugget series coin was originally the Gold Kangaroo series minted by the Perth Mint until the design was changed in 1989 to feature the kangaroo to represent Australia. Australia recognizes the coins as legal tender.

Kangaroos are Australia's most recognizable wildlife symbol. Females carry their babies around in their pouches for two months after they're born, the largest marsupial in the world. A joey, or a baby kangaroo, stays close to its mother until it's about eight months old.

Kangaroos hop along on their powerful hind legs and reach speeds of over 35 mph on their hind legs. During mating season, male kangaroos often box with their strong hind legs while leaning back on their tails.
