The United States Mint....

I mentioned in yesterday’s post about an article I read on Bloomberg about the US Mint stopping production of the Silver American Eagle and the Gold American Eagle by the end of the month.

Well.....

Today I read an article with even more information.

The US Mint is only completing outstanding orders on both the American Silver Eagle and the Gold American Eagle. Once these orders are fulfilled they with stop production of both completely.

They have already stopped the production on the fractional gold coins. There will not be anymore half ounce, quarter ounce, or tenth ounce gold coins produced. Only the one ounce Gold American Eagle is being struck to complete orders.

So I went to the US Mint website. On there you can check sales of each by the month.

Here is the numbers on the Gold American Eagle:

One ounce:
January - 191,000
February - 101,500

Half ounce:
January - 22,000
February - 0

Quarter ounce:
January - 36,000
February - 0

Tenth ounce:
January - 95,000
February - 0

That confirms the information for sure. We are two weeks into February and no fractional gold coins have been minted.

Ok, now let’s look at the Silver American Eagle.

January - 4,775,000
February - 2,121,000

Giving you a total of just under seven million sold so far. That’s not a lot of by any means for this coin.

These are not final mintage numbers. These are current sales by the month which the US Mint updates.

If you can find any fractional gold American Eagles at a fairly reasonable premium I’d grab them. Those are the Lowest mintage numbers of any year.

So much for the original US Mint release about the new design.....

They put out information on their website in early January that the new design would be released mid year.

I guess March is mid year for them....
