I think that narrators (from the perspective of the comic characters) are 5th-dimensional imps. Like Mister Mxyzptlk from the pages of Superman. It is a high-stress job, like being an air traffic controller, so some of them eventually crack and get hired from Craigslist instead of through the official narrator union.
