For those of you that are only familiar with the Marvel Universe from the movies and have not read the comics, this is the original Captain Marvel. He was born Mar-Vell of the Kree Empire and became known as the hero Captain Marvel. This is the dude that killed Thanos in the comics. He was also one of the only Marvel characters to die and stay dead besides Uncle Ben (until they brought him back briefly during the Civil War story arc).
Carol Danvers (movie Captain Marvel) was his love interest, who became Ms. Marvel (because all male heroes require a female counterpart ala Supergirl, Batgirl, Thor Girl, yes Thor Girl is real). Lost her powers, got new powers later as Binary (which is closer to her power level in the MCU) then fairly recently began using the name Captain Marvel, much to the irritation of Monica Rambeau (see Wanda Vision) who was previously going by the name Captain Marvel.
I've actually read very few comics with Captain Marvel because he died when I was a kid. He was never actually that powerful, so I'm not sure how the heck he killed Thanos. I read the issue where he fought Nitro and was exposed to a lethal dose of poison gas, and Marvel Graphic Novel #1 where he died of cancer as a result of that gas.
