By the mid-twenties, the Soviet Union was in a very serious condition: the loss of the First World have been compounded by fratricidal and destructive civil war that ended formally in 1924, as well as the intervention, which was attended by 14 countries. The country was bled dry, weakened inner-conflicts (Trotskyists - Stalinists), subversion dissatisfied with the new government foreign and domestic agents, as well as unprecedented banditry. The mass exodus from villages to cities, connected with the hope for a "new power and a new life," led to overcrowding of cities, increased unemployment, crime and unsanitary conditions. At the same time, the volume of food production declined, and low-productivity manual labor on the ground could not compensate for the outflow of workers to the cities. The country faced a threat of hunger. In the international arena, too, everything was very uneasy. The First World War did not resolve a number of interstate disputes and contributed to the formation of new ones. A new big war was clearly outlined. All more or less capable states intensively re-equipped their armies and it became evident that this would be a "war of motors," a war of technology and industry. But it was very bad with the industry in the USSR.Weakness of the industrial base of the Russian Empire was revealed by the First World War. Revolution, Civil War, intervention did not improve her condition at all. And what was not destroyed and looted, over the years is hopelessly outdated. A huge country with a large population, fertile lands and huge reserves of various resources proved unable to protect itself, arm the modern army, and master all these riches. The death of such a state education was only a matter of time.
