What you're saying is true. Bitcoin has undeniable utility but that utility is available to anyone regardless of whether they hold bitcoins or not. To benefit from the ornamental value of gold, for example, one must hold it.
One could argue that transaction fees are what give the currency itself value and the more the more popular the use of the network. Competition over block space would increase the willingness of the users of the network to pay higher transaction fees in USD terms. Because the transaction fees are paid in BTC that would translate into higher BTC valuations in USD.
