Plan Do Check Act

The PDCA cycle is a quality improvement process applicable to work, play, love, friendships and basically all areas of life.

It is a simple, but effective tool for improvement, which is effective if you are honest in your assessments and motivated to achieve clear or well defined goals.

It is so well known, and universally recognized tool, that it is not owned by anyone. It is part of the public domain.

The letters PDCA stand for Plan, Do, Check, and Act.

Plan

Assess the current state or status of the situation you want to improve, define clear goals, and then think of ways to achieve the goals.

If a problem exists, examine it in detail.

Develop possible solutions and means of execution.

In this phase, gather as much information as possible to make informed decisions about how to proceed.

Do:

Execute or try out the plans, making sure everyone involved understands the changes.

This implementation phase is key to getting accurate results.

Check:

Follow up to see how effective the changes are.

Spend some time comparing the new state to how things were previously

Act

If the changes work, continue using them.

If the changes didn’t work, decide what to do differently.

The cycle continues.

This assessment the plan of action feeds back into P or Plan.
Then new changes are fed into D or Do.
Then after executing or trying the new Plan you will again perform C or Check.
