Great game.
- The game just ended and it was great.
- Usually these games are routes, with two teams who are Champions of their respective divisions meeting, but usually one gets beaten badly and the games are disappointing.
- This game was different, these two teams actually seemed well matched and the game was low scoring, close and even went into overtime, and ended on an exciting series of plays.
From the beginning…
-This game was interesting from the beginning because although San Francisco seemed to dominate the line of scrimmage both offensively and defensively they were unable to get points on the board.
- San Francisco ran the ball well and moved the ball across the field in a professional and creative series of plays which confused their opponent.
- However unforced errors like a fumble inside the ten yard line robbed them of the opportunity to put 7 points on the board.
- Once Kansas City had the ball they were able to quickly move out of the poor field position they had with quick sharp passing, but their drive eventually fizzled, under the unrelenting pounding the San Francisco defense rained down on them. So they were forced to punt and couldn’t capitalize on the fumble, and they too didn’t put any points on the board.
- However, San Francisco was able to get another drive going and again moved the ball down field and threatened to score a touchdown, but Kansas Cities defense stiffened and they had to settle for a field goal. But it put 3 points on the board. Kansas City was unable to put their offensive proudness on display before the confusing San Francisco defense, which appeared to be a strange hybrid of both zone and man to man, so their next drive ran out of steam and they failed to score once again. San Francisco was able to execute their offensive plan well in their next possession and scored a touch down, taking the lead 10 to 0.
- At this point things looked bleak for Kansas City, as the first half of the game was only a few minutes away from ending, and no team in Super Bowl history has come back from being held scoreless in the first half to win the game.
- But Kansas City dug deep into their supply of pride and determination, and drove down the field and got close enough to kick a three point field goal. Thus narrowing the score to 10 to 3 at halftime.
Exciting second half and historic game ending
- The second half of the game saw both teams execute offensive drives alternatively in an interesting fashion, as San Francisco showed amazing creativity in executing previously unseen strategies which kept their opponent off balance and allowed them to score 9 more points. Kansas City, to their credit was able to slowly figure out both the puzzling defense of San Francisco and the very innovative offense and scored 16 hard earned points. These events culminated in Kansas City tying the game at 19 all at the end of regulation time. Thus forcing the Super Bowl into Overtime status for the first time in history. San Francisco struck first, but their offensive drive to the goal line petered out and they settled for a three point field goal. Kansas City took possession of the ball and drove the length of the field to score a six point touchdown and win the game instantly. It was simply amazing.
Record breaking, evenly matched game, possibly best match up in games history.
- As a lifelong football fan, I was very impressed with the true meeting of champions this game provided.
- I admired both San Francisco’s innovative offensive and defensive strategies, and Kansas Cities ability to analyze them and adapt to win.
- I was impressed with both teams, and since both teams stars were very young, I expect to see them again next year.
