Hmm...a few come to mind:

1. Tree pest/disease specific to those trees. Are they the same types of trees as those in the forest area? Maybe if they are different that is why they were damaged, but the forest trees are fine.
2. Some sort of water quality which impacted the tree root system.
3. Perhaps a weather event?
