Sometimes labels from the jars are so hard to get rid of, especially wine bottles. even if you soaked them for hours, they don't go that easy. So, we need a little science behind those stubborn labels.
You will need:
Bicarbonate soda
Vinegar, 1/2 cup
Hot water
Dish washing liquid, few drops
Jars, empty
The Experiment
- Fill your basin or sink with a very hot water and soak your recycled jars.
- Add the dish washing liquid and Bicarbonate soda into the basin or sink.
- Add the vinegar and observe the reactions how it sizzles in the water.
- Wait for 25 minutes and rinse off your jar. The labels from the jars will be easily shred when you rinse off, It should look like these.
- Dry the jars and decorate them as you want.
What happens when Bicarbonate soda and Vinegar mix together?
If you combine Bicarbonate soda and vinegar, It creates reactions called carbonic acid. This causes reactions that result in fizzing, bubbling, popping and crackling. This chemical is not stable so gradually it turns into a carbon dioxide. On the other hand, carbon dioxide is a gas that does not mix with water. It is the air we use for exhaling when we breath.
When the carbonic acid disappears, what will remain will just be the carbon dioxide and water. Then bubbles will be visible around the experiment and these bubbles are actually a carbon dioxide that escapes from the water through bubbles.
Sodium Acetate
When all the carbon dioxide disappears, the fizzing, bubbling, crackling and popping will suddenly stop and only will be left from the basin is water and sodium acetate.
This experiment is popularly used in a classroom by pupils for science experiments.
