LOH Contest #307-Decisiones difíciles/Difficult decisions (ESP-ENG)
As children, it's easy to think that Mom and Dad, or Grandma, or a teacher, or any other adult around us simply knows all the answers and has the world held by the hand with their exhaustive understanding of life. But in reality, it's when we reach adulthood that we realize the point isn't knowing everything, but rather gradually understanding as we go along, with ups and downs and through our own or others' experiences, learning to cope with day-to-day life and everything that happens to us.
I always thought that as I grew up I would immediately know how to be more mature about every issue, that I would know what decisions to make with certainty without hesitating, the way every proper adult supposedly does. But it's something I'm still learning. Making decisions can sometimes be a simple task — perhaps when ordering at a restaurant or choosing a dress (although sometimes we still take our time, hahaha). However, there are occasions when life simply takes such an unexpected turn that a quick and precise decision is required about something so complex where I don't know what to answer or what decision to make.
Sometimes it's hard to decide on a career to pursue in the assignment process after completing our studies; it's hard to decide where to live and where to move; a job change; starting a business. The pros and cons are important, as is the opinion of others who can help us or at least support us. Deciding who I'm going to marry, when I'll have my children, what projects I want to start pursuing in my life — these are simply things we figure out as we go along, or they just happen without having the remotest idea of what comes next, and we have to reorganize our schedule.
When I don't know what to do in those unexpected or very important situations, I pray and ask God for direction to face those moments and make an appropriate decision. I talk with my husband; he is understanding and listens to me when I need to tell him something that's happening to me and where I need help. Sometimes my mom or my sister are also a great help, although there are those moments when the situation suddenly arises and I have to go alone to solve it — that's when I put it in God's hands and get to work.
One occasion, and I believe it was the hardest I've experienced when it comes to making decisions, was leaving the career I had studied and graduated from: medicine. I studied in another province, but after getting married I moved. During that same period I was finishing my degree, my mom had left on a mission a few months earlier, and here everything was far away. I didn't know many people apart from my husband and his family and the brothers and sisters from church. Where I lived before, everything was close — the hospital was about four blocks away. I had thought about what it would be like upon graduating to be right there, especially in the middle of how difficult it sometimes is to get around from one place to another here in Cuba amid the transportation, electricity, and other crises.
This led me to a stressful situation. As if that weren't enough, I had a specific specialty upon graduating that had been granted to me since my 5th year because I studied under the vertical internship modality in that specialty while doing my regular internship. However, when I moved, they told me I had to give up my specialty too. All the changes came together. My sister also told me later that she was pregnant, and it hurt me to be far from her since we had never been apart — we had been together all our lives, we even studied together until the end. I tried to handle that new beginning well, but it was very hard for me and I became depressed to the point of leaving my career. It was hard, stressful, and painful after so much effort, and I also questioned how I could pick myself up. I only asked God for strength to do so and to get through the process, and sometimes when I think about it, it's still difficult.
My family and my husband, as well as my husband's family, helped me a lot, and thank God, although I haven't yet returned to my career, I did start a new sales business that, although small now, excites me as I try to grow it into something bigger. And that's my experience. Has something like this happened to you, something difficult to deal with?
If so, I invite you to take part in Ladies of Hive #307. There are also other questions to answer, interact with, and share experiences. Greetings and blessings to everyone.
